My Review
This is really a story within a story. Papa Joe is reading the story of The Tortoise and the Hare to his three children, Chelsea, Alexander and Jasmine. Therefore, we do not just get to hear the story but the responses of the children also.
It is a nice little book which has been colourfully illustrated by Daniela Frongia. The narrative is clear and I particularly liked the way in which some of the words were highlighted in colour with a definition in the following sentence. This was so much better than having a glossary at the end as many books do as it did not interfere with the flow of the story.
It is an adaptation of the original Aesop's Tortoise and Hare story and was well conveyed. As with all fairy tales it comes with a moral attached. In this case, it is the value of determination, persistence and how it never pays to be overly confident in ourselves.
It is the first book in the Return to Fable Land series.
