The Resistance Girls by Alice G. May - #bookreview #blogtour

I signed The Official Secrets Act in a cluttered basement that smelt of damp. It was two o'clock on a Friday afternoon...

***

The Blurb

They said women were a liability in war. They were wrong.

An intriguing invitation…

Hampered by a controlling father and overlooked by everyone she knows, Serenity Ashworth (Wren to her friends) is determined to do her duty for the war effort and take advantage of the new opportunities for young women like her. So, when a mysterious letter from a Major Belinda Stapleton arrives, Wren is intrigued.

A secret army of women…

Major Stapleton invites Wren to join her Secret Army – a select group of women operating undercover to combat enemy agents. It’s an opportunity to play a critical role in the British Resistance should Hitler ever invade Britain’s shores. Eager to sign up, Wren must first complete a tough training program and, if she succeeds, will enter a world of secrets and spies where the only people she can rely on are the other girls she's trained with.

A daring and deadly mission...

Unable to share her secret with anyone, Wren must be ever alert. But when her twin brother Tommy is reported missing in action, Wren's devastated, and even more determined to hit back at the enemy any way she can. When an unexpected opportunity arises to save Tommy, Wren must overcome all self-doubt and take a chance to save those she loves - even if she pays the ultimate price...

My Review

I am already a fan of this author, having previously read her novel, The Mid-Life Trials of Annabeth Hope, and her art book How to Draw a Giraffe. Needless to say, I was delighted when I was presented with the opportunity to read The Resistance Girls as part of the blog tour.

I enjoy books that deal with the part that women played during the war. They were every bit as essential to the ultimate victory as the men who were away fighting. The main character, Wren, fell very much into this category. She wanted to do her bit but she also wanted to escape her father's bullying and undermining influence.

Wren's twin brother, Tommy is away fighting. When Wren is offered the opportunity to work as part of a secret women's army she grabs the opportunity with both hands. I really liked her determination and strength of character.

There is also a love interest in the shape of Tommy's best friend, Edward. Their paths seem to keep crossing and there is a spark between them on each occasion.

This was a quick and easy read and is perfect for those who enjoy books set during World War Two. It is a heartwarming book with a satisfying ending. It is the first in a series and will appeal to readers who like strong female characters in their fiction.

The One True Thing by Linda Newbery - #blogtour #bookreview

Drawn outside by the first pale light, she stood on the terrace gazing down at the garden. The air was moist, carrying scents of mown grass and honeysuckle...

***

The Blurb

"How can I truthfully tell you I'm sorry, when the worst thing I ever did has turned out to be the best?"

Bridget feels compromised. By marrying Anthony Harper and moving to Wildings, his family home for three generations, she's abandoned her urban roots for rural affluence and comfort she hasn't earned. As Anthony becomes increasingly difficult and their marriage flounders, she immerses herself in her new career as gardener and designer. Conscience urges her to leave him; but with her identity and status so closely bound to the garden she knows intimately, how can she? Soon circumstances mean that a split with Anthony is at first essential, then impossible ...

When Meg, a young stonemason, rents a workshop at Wildings, she wants only to be independent and alone. In the exacting craft of cutting letters in stone she finds meaning and purpose, her one true thing. But in spite of her resolve to avoid emotional attachments, she's drawn into intense relationships: with Bridget and with Adam, another artist-in-residence whose confident manner and bold abstract paintings mask deep inner conflict. She finds herself caught between competing claims of loyalty, trust and desire.

A generation on, Jane, the youngest Harper daughter, is left aimless and adrift when Anthony dies suddenly, with the surprise in his Will that he had another son, unknown to the family. Now Wildings must be sold. Everything is in turmoil - work, home, her on-off relationship with Tom. Who is the stranger who's to inherit a third of the estate? Where will she go, and how will she face the future alone? Aware that Meg and her mother each had an absorbing focus for their energy and passion, she is unsure where to find her own - but without it, what's the purpose of her life?

Now far from Wildings, but bound by a promise to support Jane, Meg is unable to be honest about the secrets she knows from both parents - or thinks she knows. Having thought of herself as the observer who saw everything, she's forced to realise how much she failed to see - and the cost to herself and to those she loves.

When the ground shifts, where is one true thing to be found?

My Review

This book was only published yesterday and I feel enormously privileged to have had an advance copy to read as it was fabulous.

The chapters are told from the point of view of the three main characters, Bridget, a renowned garden designer, her daughter, Jane and stonemason, Meg.

We learn from the opening page that Bridget is soon to pass away, and much of her story is told retrospectively. Please don't think the mention of death on the first page makes this a maudlin book. That couldn't be further from the truth. Rather, it is a story of all of the characters looking back at their lives to a time when Bridget was the focus. Mother to Jane and close friend to Bridget, we see her and the plot from their individual perspectives and it makes for marvellous reading.

Bridget is married to the temperamental Anthony but they are not happy and everyone around them can see this. He is unappreciative of Bridget and everything that she does. It was fascinating to observe the path that their marriage follows when it looks as though separation is the only option.

Jane's section of the book is told from the point when Anthony dies which adds another dimension to the story. We also hear from Meg at this time too.

The setting of this book was every bit as important as the characters. When Bridget marries Anthony, she moves into his family home, Wildings. It is so far from her working class roots that she feels completely out of place. That is until she transforms the gardens and outbuildings into something beautiful and purposeful. She carves out a successful career for herself, and the growth of her confidence was wonderful to follow.

I thought Meg was also a wonderful character. Her intention is to keep herself remote from the others when she rents one of the renovated outbuildings as a workplace studio. She observes those around her but cannot help but become embroiled in their lives, including that of Adam, an artist who rents the studio beside hers.

In so many ways, the book is about each of them discovering their own purpose in life, and I am sure this will resonate with readers. We observe the characters doing this very thing in their individual ways, although this is not always straight forward.

The book has been beautifully written. Ms. Newbery knows her craft very well, and it made this book a joy to read. It is appropriately paced for its genre. It has a gentle rhythm, and I was genuinely sorry when I turned the final page of the book. I could have happily stayed within the pages of this book for much longer.

There are very few books which I keep once I have read them. Quite frankly, there are many many books which, whilst enjoyable to read do not warrant a second outing. Then every now and then I come across a book that I keep, that feels like an old friend sitting upon my bookshelf. This is one such book that I can foresee myself reading again.

I heartily recommend this to anyone who enjoys literary fiction or books about relationships. Even garden lovers will appreciate this book. I am confident readers will enjoy this book every bit as much as I did.

Shadows in the Spring by Christina Courtenay - #excerpt #extract #blogtour

I am absolutely delighted to be bringing you an excerpt of Shadows in the Spring by Christina Courtenay. This is one I've had my eye on for a while and it looks fabulous!

The Blurb

Two souls bound together but lost in time. Until now.

AD 80

Duro of the Iceni tribe escaped life as an enslaved gladiator and is now finally home in Britannia with one thing on his mind: vengeance. For 20 years he has sought the Roman legionary who destroyed his family. What he didn’t expect was Gisel: a fierce Germanic woman with long white-blonde hair, forced into slavery by the Romans. Hypnotised by her spirit and her beauty, Duro frees Gisel and slowly tries to win her trust as they work together to complete his quest.

Present Day

Mackenna Jackson returns to Bath with a broken heart, thanks to rockstar Blue Daniels. Luckily she can still count on Blue’s former bandmate Jonah Miller as a listening ear. But Jonah has secretly been fighting stronger feelings, drawn to Mac’s quiet confidence and gorgeous white-blonde hair. As they explore the area, memories they can’t quite explain flood them both.

Is the spark between Mac and Jonah in fact a sign of something much deeper – a love enduring through millennia – or can it all be an illusion?

The Excerpt

Brussels, Belgium, late May, Present Day

Mackenna Jackson tugged her suitcase into the large hotel foyer. She knew it was somewhere in the centre of Brussels, part of one of the luxury hotel chains, but she didn’t care which one. It looked like all the other umpteen hotels she’d stayed in during the last six months, and the name and location were irrelevant.

She had met her boyfriend, Bryan ‘Blue’ Daniels, during a party held by the record company she’d worked for as a temporary receptionist. It was a clichéd meet-cute, but there was instant attraction between them and they’d started dating. Mac felt the whole thing was a bit surreal, as Blue was the lead singer in the famous band Valhalla Storm. She was Cinderella to his Prince Charming, drawn into a whole new world where shopping at Harrods and eating at the finest restaurants was nothing out of the ordinary.

When he’d asked her to give up her job and travel with the band on their upcoming tour, she hadn’t hesitated. It had seemed like the opportunity of a lifetime, and the glamorous lifestyle beckoned. Unfortunately, the reality was much less exciting. Long, boring days of travel, a lot of waiting around in hotel rooms, and endless parties with groupies and other hangers-on. Even the concerts, which she’d once felt so privileged to watch from the side of the stage, became samey. Something to be endured, not enjoyed. Not that she would ever tell Blue that. He was inordinately proud of Valhalla Storm, and rightly so. If you didn’t have to hear the songs on repeat, they were fabulous.

A bodyguard stationed by the lifts nodded to her. ‘Hey, Mac, you’re back! I heard the news – so sorry for your loss.’

‘Thank you, Jimmy.’

She swallowed down the lump in her throat. She’d had to fly home to attend her beloved aunt Sandra’s funeral, and it had been a difficult time. Aged only sixty-one, Sandra should have had many more years to enjoy life, but she’d been diagnosed with a savage type of cancer. Mac couldn’t believe she was gone. It was like a bad dream, but now she just wanted to put it all behind her and start the grieving process.

‘Let’s get you a key card. I bet you want nothing more than to crash, am I right?’ Jimmy ushered her over to the reception desk and swiftly procured a card to Blue’s room.

Tired beyond belief, she took the lift to the top floor, where the band members all had a suite each. She had managed to get away a day early and couldn’t wait to see Blue again. To be enveloped in his arms and let go of all the tension roiling through her.

Stepping out of the lift, wheeling her case behind her, she was hit by a wall of music coming from one of the suites, whose door stood wide open. The bass thumped so loudly she could feel it vibrating in her stomach, and she sighed. She guessed Blue was in the thick of it – he loved to party and never missed an evening of fun – and she decided to leave him to it.

Heading for his room, which thankfully wasn’t the loud one, she slotted in the key card and pushed open the door, stepping into a lavish sitting room. Immediately, she heard giggling coming from the adjoining bedroom. Leaving her suitcase, she walked over to peer in through the door, stopping dead at the sight before her. It was yet another ultimate cliché, and presumably every rock star’s dream. Blue was lying in the middle of the giant bed with a blonde woman on either side of him. Despite having different facial features, they were eerily similar, and their naked bodies had clearly been spray-tanned recently, judging by the somewhat unnatural colour of their skin. They were pretty, though, it had to be said.

Mackenna could see why Blue might have had a hard time resisting them. And yet he should have done. Had sworn he would never want anyone but her.

Yeah, so much for that.

‘Oh Blue, you’re so perfect,’ one of the blondes murmured in a thick French accent.

Blue chuckled, clearly having the time of his life, until he looked up and caught sight of Mackenna. His eyes went comically wide and he struggled to sit up, flailing against the onslaught of the blonde bombshells. ‘Mac! Baby! You’re back already? Didn’t you say . . .?’

‘That I was arriving tomorrow? Yes, but I managed to get an earlier flight. Guess I shouldn’t have bothered. Enjoy the rest of your evening. And the rest of your life.’

She turned away from the awful scene in front of her, unable to watch for even a second longer. The lump in her throat had grown to epic proportions and would not be contained any longer. Tears spilled over and ran down her cheeks, and she swiped at them impatiently. Honestly, had she really been naïve enough to think she’d be enough for a rock star? That this would last? Yes, she’d been told by her friends that she was beautiful, smart and fun to be with, but he could have anyone he wanted. Supermodels. Blonde clones. Why would he want to tie himself to one woman? That wasn’t very rock ’n’ roll, was it?

God, she’d been such fool. It was time to return to reality.

The Cross of Ciaran by Andrea Matthews - #bookspotlight #blogtour

I am delighted to be shining the book spotlight on this book today. The Cross of Ciaran by Andrea Matthews is the first in the Cross of Ciaran series and looks like a really good read.

The Blurb

When a fifth century pagan priest is unearthed in Ireland fifteen hundred years after being entombed, archaeologist Caitlin O’Connell is convinced it’s the find of the century. The body is in perfect condition, right down to the intricate tattoos adorning the Celt’s skin. In fact, if scientific data hadn’t proved otherwise, she would swear he hadn’t been interred more than a few hours.

Eager to discover more about the mysterious Celt, Caitlin accompanies the body back to the New York museum where she’s employed, but before she has time to study him, the priest disappears without a trace.

Rumors surrounding the event begin to circulate and result in the excavation’s benefactor pulling the plug on the entire expedition. The rumors are not far off the mark though.

After being buried alive for betraying his goddess and his priesthood in the dawning age of Christianity, Ciarán wakes to a strange new world. Alone and frightened in an unforgiving city, he stumbles upon the only thing familiar to him and seeks sanctuary within the church walls.

With the help of the parish’s pastor, Father Mike, Ciarán slowly grows accustomed to his surroundings, though he’s plagued by dark dreams and the disturbing sensation that an evil from his past has followed him into the future.

But a more immediate danger lurks on his doorstep. Caitlin is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery concerning her missing Celt, and when she meets her Uncle Mike’s new handyman, Ciarán Donnelly, she’s convinced the handsome Irishman knows more about the theft than he’s letting on.

Yet, even she can’t deny the attraction between them, simmering below the surface and blurring the lines between her personal and professional life.

But will Ciarán’s secrets draw them together or shatter their future forever.

Down in the Sea of Angels by Khan Wong - #bookreview

March 4, 2106 - Marshall Cove, San Francisco

A dozen drones buzzed right in my face when I got there. Beside the bonfire, a scruffy guy in coveralls fidgeted with a tablet, tongue stuck out of the corner of his mouth in concentration, presumably controlling these things...

***

The Blurb

In the year 2106, climate change has altered the world, transforming borders, cities, and socioeconomic structures. Additionally, a cosmic event known as the “Bloom” has awakened psionic abilities in a small percentage of the population.

One such individual is Maida Sun, who possesses the ability to know the history of objects she touches. In the course of her new job with a cultural recovery project in San Francisco, she comes across an object that plunges her into the lives of Li Nuan, a sex-trafficked girl in a Chinatown brothel in 1906 longing for freedom, and Nathan, a tech-designer and hedonist in 2006 seeking greater purpose.

When a chance encounter with a political leader’s watch reveals a plan to eliminate psions – people like her – Maida must find a way to stop his agenda before it gains traction.

Flashes of the past and glimpses of the future provide Maida, Li Nuan and Nathan clues to help their own situations as they, each in their own way, confront exploitation and fight for liberation while living under the specter of environmental collapse.

My Review

At the beginning of this year, I promised myself I would read some books which were outside my usual reading comfort zone. When I was offered the opportunity to read this one, it sounded like the ideal book to try out a little science fiction.

This book is set during three time periods. We follow Li Nuan in 1906, Nathan in 2006 and Maida Sun in 2106. I reassured myself that with parts of the book set in the past and the present, then those would provide a gateway into the science fiction element for me. However, it was no time at all before I was absorbed by Maida's part in this story too. Isn't it wonderful to be pleasantly surprised by a reading experience?

I found all three of the characters completely believable. Li Nuan, who has been sex-trafficked, Nathan, who comes to realise that there must be more to life than his hedonism and job with a tech company, and Maida whose psionic abilities drive her towards an object that will link all three of them.

What I particularly enjoyed was Nathan's awakening to the fact that he was a contributor to the future environmental consequences that those in his period of time were causing. Fast forward to Maida's section of the book where those consequences have indeed occurred, and we observe a world in which those consequences have transpired due to the lifestyles of those who have come before her, known in the book as the Precursors. It serves as a warning to us all.

I enjoyed the journeys of all three of the main characters. They were engaging and each of their stories made for compelling reading. I particularly liked the way the author ultimately portrayed the connection between the three characters. He gathered all of the strands together to produce a satisfying ending to the book.

As a newbie to science fiction/fantasy this book has left me wanting more. Do you have any suggestions of what I should read next?

You can find out more about Khan's previous book, The Circus Infinite, here..

I will mention at this point that some of Li Nuan's story was difficult to read as she is a sex-trafficked minor and the sexual scenes are graphically portrayed. It is shocking to realise that not only did this happen during the time period but still happens today. That said, this is still an excellent book but if it is a trigger for you then you may want to give this one a miss.

The Secret Collector by Abigail Johnson - #blogtour #bookreview

Alfred had not let anyone inside his house for almost three years. Not that anyone cared. The overgrown weeds and bushes that swamped the small front garden were usually enough of a deterrent to any potential callers...

***

The Blurb

When an elderly eccentric collector and a troubled teen become each other's only hope of getting their  lives back on track, what can possibly go wrong?

Alfred is an elderly widower who uses antiques and collectibles to fill the hole in his heart left by his late  wife. Kian is a lost teen who has been let down by the care system and finds it difficult staying on the  straight and narrow.

After Kian throws a brick through Alfred's window, the shock sends Alfred to hospital and a social worker to his home, where his hoarding becomes impossible to ignore.

Begrudgingly, and at the request of the authorities, they both agree to enrol Kian on a restorative justice  programme, helping to make Alfred’s home liveable again. The only problem: Alfred doesn't want to throw  any of his treasures away, and he certainly doesn’t want Kian for company.

What unfolds is a surprising and delightful journey of two characters who help each other more than they  ever could have anticipated and, along the way, form the unlikeliest of friendships.

My Review

This was a delightful read, and I loved everything about it.

The main characters, Alfred and Kian are brought together as part of the restorative justice programme after Kian throws a brick through Alfred's window. What follows is one of the most delightful of friendships that I have discovered within the pages of a book.

However, this friendship took time to form. Initially, they are resentful of each other. Both characters are flawed; both trying to appease the authorities that have entered their lives following the incident caused by Kian. If the restorative justice fails then teenager Kian fears he will be sent to prison and elderly Alfred is concerned he will be placed into a care home.

There are some difficult themes addressed in the book; growing up in care, grief and abandonment to name the main ones. However, Ms. Johnson dealt with this with compassion and sensitivity. At no point does the book ever become overly dramatic.

I was actually rather sorry when the book ended as it was delightful to be immersed in this story. Had time permitted I would have gobbled this up in one sitting. It was a quick and easy read with charming characters and a delightful plot line.

It is a well written, heartfelt and joyous book which was a delight to read. This is a debut novel from the author, Abigail Johnson. I thought it was fabulous and highly accomplished. If her future writing is as fabulous as this is then she is definitely one to watch.

It is a heartfelt novel which is full of hope and optimism. I highly recommend this book.

Playing for Keeps in Starr's Fall by Kate Hewitt - #bookreview

The turkey sat in the middle of the table, cooling and congealing and generally looking unappetizing. It wasn't even a real turkey, just a pre-cooked turkey crown that had come with shrink-wrapped veggies on the side, an all-in-one Thanksgiving dish that looked like she'd bought it at a minimart...

***

The Blurb

As the frozen earth gives way to the first spring crocuses, pushing their way into the warmer air, Maggie arrives in Starr’s Fall. She’s looking for a new start, with her lovable but painfully shy teenaged son in tow.

It feels like the odds are against her, but she’s determined to come out winning this time, and to fulfil her dream of opening up a board game café. But not everything’s a game, and when she finds herself attracted to a man who’s known as a different sort of player, she worries she’s setting herself up to lose.

Zach is funny, surprisingly geeky, and, most importantly, bonds with her son. But Zach is also drop-dead gorgeous, has a reputation around town, and is also ten years younger than her.

When he asks her out on a date, Maggie is totally thrown. She can’t deny she’s attracted to him. But is she ready to risk her heart with another roll of the dice?

My Review

This is the second book in the Starr's Fall series. I hadn't read the first one prior to this and it didn't affect my enjoyment of this book one little bit.

Starr's Fall is a small town where the main character, Maggie and her son, Ben have relocated to following the death of Maggie's husband. She is seeking a fresh start for them both and decides to open a game cafe in the town. The last thing that she is considering is romance but there is definitely some chemistry between her and younger neighbour Zach.

I liked Maggie's character very much. Her priority in life is her son Ben who has been through a challenging time lately. Not just in losing his father but there have been other things going on in his life that have caused Maggie to seek this fresh start for him. I appreciated the way with every decision she made she had Ben's welfare at the front of her mind and I think this made her extremely likeable.

I equally enjoyed the small town setting which the author described perfectly. By the end of the book I almost felt as though I knew it well enough that I could stroll through it's streets and say hello to all the town's inhabitants. The author brought the setting very much to life on the page.

Zach, the love interest was also a great character. He is younger than Maggie, and she has heard rumours that he is unreliable boyfriend material. As a reader, I wasn't getting this impression of him. Rather, he appears kind and considerate, and he is definitely attracted to Maggie. It's a slow burn of a romance, but it was perfectly portrayed and I was rooting for them to get together.

I am feeling very tempted to go back and read the first book in this series, Coming Home to Starr's Fall. If it is as good as this book was then I know I am in for a reading treat.

I am delighted to be shining the book spotlight on this book today. Oscar's Tale by Chris Bishop is a stand alone book which was released in February of this year.

I love the cover. Very exciting!

The Blurb

Oscar’s Tale is that of a Saxon boy who sets out to find and rescue his father who has been taken by Viking slavers.

The story begins in 877, just prior to the Viking attack on Chippenham in which King Alfred was routed. Against this backdrop, Oscar is obliged to set out on his all but impossible quest and quickly becomes embroiled in all that’s going on in Wessex at this turbulent time, culminating in him playing a small but important part in the battle at Edington.

But this is not just a story about blood thirsty battles and fearsome warriors, it’s about a boy struggling to live up to his father’s reputation as a warrior and trying to find his place in a dangerous and uncertain world. For that, he is forced to confront many dangers and earn the respect of others who are far above his station. Along the way he also finds love – albeit at a cost far higher than most would have been willing to pay.

‘For is it not the wish of every man that his son will achieve more in life than he did?’

Assistant literary agent Freya Harrison never thought her chance at a big break would look like this: at a swanky romance conference in New York, managing the agency’s most insufferable client.

Sure, Jake Richards is a global best-selling author, adored by all his fans. But on meeting him, Freya finds him arrogant, condescending, and, worst of all, a complete phony.

After being overheard calling romance ‘easy money’ and his readers ‘fools’, Jake’s reputation is tanking. And it’s Freya’s job to clean up the mess – and maybe, finally prove her worth to her boss.

But with Jake one slip away from another PR disaster, doubts are starting to set in. Can she survive this week without losing her mind – or her heart?

Fashion, I came to realise, wasn’t just about beautiful dresses. It was about self-respect, freedom of expression and power.

1910, Edinburgh. Young seamstress Maisie McIntyre’s world shatters with her mother’s death. Desperate to escape the grinding poverty that has defined her life so far, Maisie makes a daring choice: she steals a bolt of peacock-blue silk, a stash of money and sails for New York City.

As she builds her couture empire, designing bold, modern fashions for Manhattan’s elite, Maisie falls for Joseph Jackson, a talented Black architect with dreams as ambitious as her own.
