The Other Boy by Heidi Field - #guestpost #authorpost #blogtour

I am absolutely thrilled to have author, Heidi Field on the blog today. Heidi is going to be talking about her book, The Other Boy which was published in June of this year. Before I hand over to Heidi, let me tell you a little about the book.

The Blurb

The Other Boy is a pulse-pounding psychological thriller with shocking twists that will keep you turning pages late into the night. When the worst comes calling…

Scott and Blair Bagby are a happy, successful English couple living in the suburbs with their teenage son and Great Dane. Life seems good, until one beautiful spring morning when a detective inspector knocks on their door asking if their son is home, unleashing an unspeakable horror that blows apart the life they thought they had.

Police have discovered bodies buried deep in the Peasedale forest and the inspector suspects one is Jamie, the final victim of a brutal and prolific serial killer. But Jamie’s death is unlike all the others, starting with his emergency phone call that leads to a macabre burial ground near a dilapidated hunting shack and creates shocking suspicions.

With bone deep grief threatening to destroy their marriage and their sanity, Scott and Blair set out to investigate Jamie’s death, a journey that not only upends their perceptions of who they are, but torturously reveals they may not have known Jamie at all…

Heidi, welcome to the blog.

The Other Boy is my first published novel and writing it has been the most wonderful rollercoaster of hard work, steep learning curves and dogged determination.

I first started writing shortly after giving birth to my first child, a baby who slept during the day and not at night. I was suffering from post-natal depression and my marriage was crumbling under the pressure. Hormone fuelled and in need of an escape, I began to write. The world was awash with Harry Potter, so my first attempt at writing was an epic YA fantasy, more Game of Thrones than Harry Potter. I then wrote a time-slip romance and a handful of children’s picture books. I had no idea if what I was producing was any good, I just loved writing.

I divorced and was a single mum for a few years before creating a blended family with my current partner and having a second child. We were raising five children, and I was working as a massage therapist. Life was busy! Writing took a back seat for fifteen years. When I emerged from the fog of a young family, with more time for me, I took a master’s degree in creative writing at Winchester University, and my writing adventure truly began.

I loved writing thrillers, my characters were often dark, damaged, unpredictable and driven by an inner darkness, although, outwardly they were also ordinary, relatable people who had been pushed beyond their limits and were clawing their way to sanity, freedom and salvation.

The idea for The Other Boy came after watching a documentary about Dean Corll, the Candyman serial killer, who raped, tortured and murdered over twenty teenage boys and young men. I didn’t want to write about a serial killer, or his victims, and I didn’t want to write about the families of the victims either, those stories are out there. I wanted to write a different story, one that was in the shadows of the gruesome crimes someone like Dean Corll committed, a story about the parents of the boys who assisted the killer, the killer’s accomplices.

I had four teenagers, one more child still to face those tricky years, and I asked myself how I would feel if my child made a choice that I could never have imagined, a terrifying choice. The Other Boy has become the first in a series of four novels, The Other Mother, The Other Killer and The Other Brother all explore the lives of other characters from the first novel, they all have unexpected twists, and each one will make you question what you know about everyone involved.

What you think is going to happen, doesn’t, what you hope will happen, won’t, and what you learn about the characters along the way may not be the whole story. Sometimes, it is the people closest to us who have the darkest of secrets, or maybe we just choose to ignore the signs because the truth is too frightening to face.

Thank you so much for joining me today.

Be Mine by Lizzy Barber - #bookreview #blogtour

A shriek rips through the blackness.

I struggle to process it in the muddy depths of sleep. It is familiarly unfamiliar; a continuous, rasping cry, insisting itself on me even as I beg it to retreat.

But when my brain starts to clear and I recognise it... The sound is coming from me...

***

The Blurb

Once, Beth was a different person, convinced she was living her dream life with the enigmatic wellness group, Elixir. But when that dream became a nightmare, she had no choice but to run, no matter what – or who – stood in her way.

Ten years later, exhausted and struggling with the pressures of motherhood, she receives a mysterious letter bearing only the infinity symbol, and knows immediately it is from them.

The past she’d run from has finally caught up with her, and the secrets she’s tried so hard to hide will soon be uncovered. Can she finally escape them for good, or will her freedom pay the ultimate price?

If wellness is the new religion, what happens when it’s taken too far?

My Review

This is a powerful and compelling novel that I couldn't put down. I went to bed one night with the intention of reading a chapter or two before I put the light out and found there was no way I was going to stop reading until I had finished it. In fact, my poor husband who has to be up extremely early for work was complaining about the light being on so late. So, what's a woman to do? Well, I gave him my sleep mask and continued reading until I'd finished it!

The book follows Beth who has escaped a cult which is dressed up as a wellness organisation called Elixir and is headed up by the charismatic Tate.  Following her escape, she has gone on to marry Adam and have a child but ten years on and the cult have tracked her down. The book is set during 2023 but with an equal number of chapters dedicated to the time when Beth becomes involved with Elixir.

As a reader we can anticipate the danger that she is getting into as she succumbs to the attraction of the organisation. I literally found myself wanting to shout at her and intervene to stop her doing this. The control that she was succumbing to was unnerving to read, all the while she herself believes these are her decisions and are for her own good.

I found myself questioning how reliable a narrator the Beth of 2023 was. She has spent the last decade looking over her shoulder, thinking the Elixir organisation will catch up with her. When she thinks they are, having initially received a letter with their symbol attached, I was wondering if she was simply paranoid.

I enjoyed the dual timeline of this book, and it moved back and forth seamlessly. The author's writing is wonderful and her ability to build tension was outstanding. Little by little we observe the life Beth has built for herself unravelling and the author portrays this skillfully.

There is a twist at the end of this story which I did not see coming until it was upon me but I shall say no more on that subject. However, I would highly encourage you to get your hands on a copy of this book to read it for yourself.

I have never read anything by this author previously but am now fully intent on reading all of her books and have already ordered a copy of My Name is Anna

Remember by Patricia Shanae Smith - #blogtour #bookreview

I have one thing to focus on. Put one foot in front of the other. Walk forward, head down. Elizabeth and Rose will take care of the rest...

***

The Blurb

A compelling psychological thriller about a young girl who is forced to confront her past demons after a mysterious new neighbour moves in next door.

Portia Willows was a high school senior in Los Angeles when a devastating car accident took the lives of her mother and sister. After their death, Portia’s social anxiety grows worse. She and her father become heavily dependent on cigarettes and alcohol to cope with their grief.

The book starts five years in the future when she must confront her distorted memory of the past – Portia has committed a crime, and she can’t remember it. As investigators close in, her fractured mind becomes a puzzle she must solve before it’s too late. Then Ethan Torke moves in across the street. At first, he seems like a distraction, but soon, his presence forces Portia to confront a possibility that she would have never expected. The deeper she digs, the more the walls of her safe reality crumble. Sinister pasts are bound to be revealed; the truth always catches up, and fantasies never last.

An unforgettable tale of memory, love, and strength through the darkest of times, Remember announces a brave new voice in psychological suspense.

My Review

I rarely give books a five star review. Then like buses, along come two in a week. In case you missed it, the other was The One True Thing by Linda Newbury. Do check out my review as the book is well worth reading.

Now back to the reason that I gave this one five shiny stars. The book begins with the trial of the main character, Portia Willows in 2025.  The book then moves back to 2022 when we begin to learn what has brought her to this point.

Portia was a great character. She has suffered with a severe anxiety disorder since childhood. When her mother and sister are killed in a car accident, this situation only worsens. We accompany her through a series of panic attacks. I have been fortunate in life that I have never suffered this myself but the book offered me a revealing insight into how it must feel. The author wrote these scenes with realism.

The narrative moves seamlessly through different parts of Portia's life. We read of the years since the car accident, her arrest and also her trial. I found the scenes surrounding her arrest gripping. Not only did I, as a reader, not understand exactly why she had been arrested but neither does Portia and so we literally shadow her through her discovery. Her crime is gradually revealed to both the reader and protagonist and I thought this was a fantastic way in which to do so.

There are some difficult themes in this book; grief, PTSD, what can happen if mental illness is left untreated and if memories are not properly processed. The author deals with all of this with both compassion and empathy.

As a debut novel this is fabulous. I was gripped from the very first page to the last. It moved along at a swift pace which suited the genre very well. It was an entertaining yet emotive read that was compelling in its sincerity.

I highly recommend this book and hope you enjoy it every bit as much as I did.

The Rebel of Seventh Avenue by Annabelle Marx

Fashion, I came to realise, wasn’t just about beautiful dresses. It was about self-respect, freedom of expression and power.

1910, Edinburgh. Young seamstress Maisie McIntyre’s world shatters with her mother’s death. Desperate to escape the grinding poverty that has defined her life so far, Maisie makes a daring choice: she steals a bolt of peacock-blue silk, a stash of money and sails for New York City.

As she builds her couture empire, designing bold, modern fashions for Manhattan’s elite, Maisie falls for Joseph Jackson, a talented Black architect with dreams as ambitious as her own. But in a world steeped in prejudice, she finds herself facing an impossible choice.

The Hero Virus by Russell Dumper - #blogtour #bookspotlight

Today, I am shining the spotlight on something a little different. The Hero Virus by Russell Dumper is the story of a pandemic with a difference; everybody wants it!

The Blurb

The Hero Virus tells the thrilling story of Chris Taylor, who is hanging on to life by a thread. Recently widowed, his only reason to carry on is his faithful Labrador, but even that doesn’t stop his willingness to gamble with death every day. When his companion suffers a violent demise, Taylor thinks he has nothing left to live for, until he discovers he has chanced upon a precious gift… when he gets very ill.

The sickness gives him powers and, fairly soon, the authorities are swooping on to the ever-increasing list of cases. The Hero Virus might be different to other illnesses, but it’s no less dangerous. The effect it has on the world, though, is wildly different to any other virus that has come before. The unique reaction of the human body to infection means that everyone wants it. And some will do anything to get it.

How do you stop a pandemic when there are people who will kill for the virus? How do you stop people getting infected when they’re willing to die for it? How do you stop the infected when they have abilities nobody has ever seen before?

The Wives by Valerie Keogh - #bookreview #blogtour

Natasha met Daniel at a gallery opening she'd gone to with a friend. It had been a crowded event, full of minor celebrities posing for cameras trying to look as if they understood, or even liked, the garishly coloured artwork that had been chosen for the opening...

The Blurb

Meet The Wives...

Lies, secrets, deadly decisions…

When Natasha meets Daniel, she knows her life is made. Rich, handsome and charming, Daniel will make the perfect husband. Even if she won’t make the perfect wife…

She is thrilled when Daniel suggests an all-expenses paid cruise for Natasha, her friends, Barbara, Tracy Ann and Michelle, and their husbands. What better way to show everyone that Natasha has finally made it?

But as the ship sets sail, she learns that far from being the perfect husband, Daniel has terrible secrets that are about to be revealed. And each of the wives has their own reasons for wanting him dead.

This trip might cost more than any of them ever imagined…

My Review

I have previously read and enjoyed a few of Valerie Keogh's books, and so I jumped at the opportunity to read this when I was offered an early reader's copy for the blog tour.

I think this is her best one yet and I was gripped from the first page to the last. It is the story of Natasha meeting Daniel. He is charming, caring and charismatic and they marry very quickly. His generosity appears to know no bounds and when he offers to pay for them both along with all of Natasha's friends and their husbands to go on a cruise, Natasha is all the more enamoured with him.

However, it is on the cruise that Natasha begins to see a different side to Daniel, who has dark secrets to hide. Equally it seems her friends have secrets too, and Natasha sees a different side to all of them, and of herself.

This made for an exciting read. Ms Keogh writes extremely well and knows how to increase the tension with the turn of every page. Being set on a cruise ship, I could really feel the sense of claustrophobia that the characters were experiencing.

The chapters vary in their point of view. Most are written from Natasha's perspective, but there are also chapters written by her friends, Michelle, Barbara and Tracy Ann. This varied perspective gave the book immediacy as I was able to understand the feelings of the different women from their own viewpoint.

The story is loaded with secrets, lies and deceptions, along with some marvellous twists and turns in the plot. This was a five star read for me and I highly recommend it.

Last Seen Online by Lauren James - #bookreview

Folks! I just watched the first episode of Loch & Ness and oh my god! That was some QUALITY television. They've amped up the chemistry of the books to a frankly absurd level. Every time Jayden and Fang (aka Rob Hennings and Nathan O'Donnell) are on-screen together my laptop overheats...

***

When Delilah meets Sawyer Saffitz (son of Anya Saffitz, aka Hollywood royalty), she becomes hooked on a decade-old scandal. In her quest for the truth, Delilah uncovers blogposts written by the mysterious “gottiewrites” and is soon caught up in a world of greed, fandom conspiracy theories … and murder. And the deeper Delilah digs, the more dangerous it becomes – because someone is willing to kill to hide the truth.

***

If you like a young adult novel with a twisty turny ending you will love this book.

The main character is Delilah. She is a teenager who wants to be an actress and who loves true crime stories. When a school audition with Sawyer, the son of famous parents, goes embarrassingly wrong, Delilah gets a taste of what it is like to be splashed all over social media for the wrong reasons.

A few years earlier Sawyer's famous mother, Anya, stars in a television series when one of her co-actors is murdered in real life, and another co-actor is imprisoned for his murder. Delilah and Sawyer decide to investigate the crime together which leads them into some devastating realisations.

The book alternates between Delilah's perspective, blog posts and forum messages. It is an interesting format and easy to get caught up in the various messages that were being posted.

It made for gripping reading about the cult of celebrity, fame and fandom. It was a quick read as it was fairly addictive. I very much wanted to see where this book was heading and it had a great twist at the end.

I highly recommend this for a young adult audience.
