Little Disasters by Sarah Vaughan - #bookreview

It is definitely the short straw of hospital medicine. A & E in a trauma centre on a Friday night in late January; almost midnight, and the waiting areas are rammed...

The Blurb

You think you know her…

But look a little closer

She is a stay-at-home mother of three with boundless reserves of patience, energy and love. After being friends for a decade, this is how Liz sees Jess.

 Then one moment changes everything.

Dark thoughts and carefully guarded secrets surface – and Liz is left questioning everything she thought she knew about her friend, and about herself.

From the bestselling author of Anatomy of a Scandal – a new thought-provoking novel exploring the complexity of motherhood and all that connects and disconnects us.

My Review

This book had me on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last.

When Jess takes her baby, Betsey, to the A&E department at hospital, she finds her best friend, Liz, is the doctor on duty. What unfolds is every mother's nightmare, as Betsey is found to have an unexplainable fracture, and the finger is pointing straight at Jess, leaving Liz with a duty to inform social services and the police.

This was a powerful book, and it is thought-provoking from beginning to end. My sympathies lay with both of these characters, as they both find themselves in an impossible situation. Whilst Jess has always appeared to be the perfect mother, we get a glimpse of what is really going on beneath this façade of capability. Having myself been a mother to four boys under the age of seven, I could really identify with how utterly exhausted Jess was feeling. The book questions how this sleep deprivation can result in poor choices being made, how alone she felt, and how she did not understand her own feelings. My heart went out to her.

Liz was an equally interesting character. She is a busy doctor, wife and mother whose own busyness has meant that she hasn't been there for Jess as much as she would have liked. Nonetheless, she doesn't believe that Jess could have harmed her child, despite the evidence suggesting otherwise. She also has to deal with the secrets of her ageing mother, and come to terms with those. There is a strong parallel between both her mother and Jess's experiences.

Although the book is over 400 pages, I read it very quickly as it kept pulling me back. It was well written and perfectly paced, leaving me keen to get back to it between reading sessions.

Sarah Vaughan is a great storyteller and has the ability to hold her readers interested throughout. She is an author I will definitely be reading again. I highly recommend this book.

The Standout by Laurel Osterkamp - #bookreview

I wanted to jump but I didn't have the guts. It was one of those moments that I know would never leave me...

The Blurb

Robin Bricker thought joining The Standout—a ballet-themed fashion competition show—would be the boldest thing she’d ever do. But when an anonymous threat tells her to dump her fiancé or risk losing everything, and a smear campaign begins targeting her online, the real danger starts behind the scenes. As jealousy brews among contestants and long-buried secrets resurface, Robin must rely on her brother Ted and the enigmatic Zelda, a fellow contestant with secrets of her own, to navigate a web of sabotage, gaslighting, and betrayal.

The Standout is a fast-paced, emotionally layered novel about reinvention, resilience, and the cost of stepping into the spotlight.

My Review

When the main character, Robin, is offered the chance of appearing in the reality television series, The Standout, she jumps at the chance as this could really catapult her career in fashion design. Alongside this, Robin is receiving threats, and an online smear campaign against her has been launched.

I really liked Robin's character. She is a brave and level-headed woman who is dealing with a lot that is going wrong in her life.

The book changes character perspective throughout. Whilst the bulk of the story is told from Robin's point of view, there are also chapters which are dedicated to Zelda, who is Robin's model on the programme, and Ted, Robin's brother who is also trying to find out what is going on with Robin's mysterious letters and smear campaign while she is out of contact whilst the programme is filming.

The book is fast paced which makes it a page-turner. I definitely wanted to know who was behind the smear campaign against Robin and I didn't guess before the reveal. I also enjoyed the way the author portrayed the growth and development of the characters. Virtually all of them learned something from the experience.

It is an easy and entertaining read and could easily be read in a couple of sittings. I recommend this book to readers.

The Many Faces of Anne Boleyn by Helene Harrison

Mistress. Queen. Reformer. Traitor. Icon.

This book is not like any others you might have read on Anne Boleyn.

It is not a biography of the life of Henry VIII’s second wife and queen.

What this book does is to examine Anne Boleyn through images and perceptions of her.

Through documents, letters, images, propaganda, films, novels and historical biographies, this book explores Anne Boleyn through more than 500 years of history.

Explore how perceptions of her have changed and developed over time.

Whether she is seen as a mistress, a queen, a mother, a reformer, a traitor, or a tragic heroine, Anne Boleyn continues to inspire so much exploration and even new discoveries today.

See Anne through the eyes of people who knew her, loved her, hated her, and studied her.

In the present day, Anne Boleyn has quite a devoted scholarship, honed through perceptions built over the last half a millennium.

Her life, reign, and tragic death at the hands of the man who tore England apart to be with her have made Anne Boleyn one of the most divisive and exciting figures in English history.

Christmas Wishes at the Station Bookshop by Margaret Amatt

After one toxic relationship too many and more failed jobs than she can count, spirited Scarlett Finch has lost her sparkle and doesn’t think she can face this year’s festive season. The last thing she expects is to land a Christmas job at Glenbriar’s Little Station Bookshop, especially not thanks to a slightly unhinged older woman with a parrot, a pug, a wild imagination, and some crackpot ideas for displays – not to mention a flair for making unexpected decisions, like hiring Scarlett without telling the owner.

Widowed dad-of-three Lloyd Miller is just trying to keep life on track. Between moving house, juggling his day job, and preparing to take over the bookshop from his retired mum, the chaos inside the shop is the last thing he needs, particularly when it includes Scarlett, the woman he shared a no-strings summer fling with… and hasn’t stopped thinking about since.

While Glenbriar twinkles with Christmas lights, both Scarlett and Lloyd are haunted by their pasts, drawn together in their present, and uncertain of their future.

A bookshop full of anonymous wishes might just give them the courage to make their own – but with neither convinced they deserve a second chance, it’ll take more than festive magic to open the book on a new romance. They can’t change the past – but they can still choose how the story goes.

 Queen Esther by John Irving

Esther Nacht is born in Vienna in 1905. Her father dies on board a ship from Bremerhaven to Portland, Maine, and anti-Semites murder her mother in Portland. In the orphanage at St. Cloud’s, it’s clear to Dr Larch, the physician and director of the orphanage, that the abandoned child not only knows she’s Jewish, but she’s familiar with the biblical Queen Esther she was named for. Dr Larch knows it won’t be easy to find a Jewish family to adopt Esther; he doubts he’ll find any family to adopt her.

When Esther is fourteen, soon to become a ward of the state, Dr. Larch meets the Winslows, a philanthropic family with a history of providing for unadopted orphans. The Winslows aren’t Jewish, but they detest anti-Semitism and similar prejudice. Esther’s gratitude to the Winslows is unending. As she retraces her steps to her birth city, Esther keeps loving and protecting the Winslows – even in Vienna.

The final chapter of this historical novel is set in Jerusalem in 1981, when Esther is seventy-six.

The Bestest Big Brother, Ever by Ben Mantle

Nano loves his big brother, Felix, but sometimes Felix gets annoyed and frustrated – he wants some SPACE; he's fed up of Nano following him around. Feeling hurt and sad after Felix bans him from the garden treehouse, Nano decides he can make his own fun. He doesn't need anyone else. But when his game in the garden goes wrong, and he ends up feeling even worse than he already did, there's only one person who knows exactly how to cheer him up. Can you guess who that is?

Writing from his own fraternal experience, as well as being a dad to two little boys himself, Ben Mantle captures all the little (and big) ups and downs, laughs and tears (and sometimes shouts!), of sibling relationships that will give children the confidence to try and sort out their own differences through patience, imaginative play and making compromises.

Remember by Patricia Shanae Smith - #blogtour #bookreview

I have one thing to focus on. Put one foot in front of the other. Walk forward, head down. Elizabeth and Rose will take care of the rest...

***

The Blurb

A compelling psychological thriller about a young girl who is forced to confront her past demons after a mysterious new neighbour moves in next door.

Portia Willows was a high school senior in Los Angeles when a devastating car accident took the lives of her mother and sister. After their death, Portia’s social anxiety grows worse. She and her father become heavily dependent on cigarettes and alcohol to cope with their grief.

The book starts five years in the future when she must confront her distorted memory of the past – Portia has committed a crime, and she can’t remember it. As investigators close in, her fractured mind becomes a puzzle she must solve before it’s too late. Then Ethan Torke moves in across the street. At first, he seems like a distraction, but soon, his presence forces Portia to confront a possibility that she would have never expected. The deeper she digs, the more the walls of her safe reality crumble. Sinister pasts are bound to be revealed; the truth always catches up, and fantasies never last.

An unforgettable tale of memory, love, and strength through the darkest of times, Remember announces a brave new voice in psychological suspense.

My Review

I rarely give books a five star review. Then like buses, along come two in a week. In case you missed it, the other was The One True Thing by Linda Newbury. Do check out my review as the book is well worth reading.

Now back to the reason that I gave this one five shiny stars. The book begins with the trial of the main character, Portia Willows in 2025.  The book then moves back to 2022 when we begin to learn what has brought her to this point.

Portia was a great character. She has suffered with a severe anxiety disorder since childhood. When her mother and sister are killed in a car accident, this situation only worsens. We accompany her through a series of panic attacks. I have been fortunate in life that I have never suffered this myself but the book offered me a revealing insight into how it must feel. The author wrote these scenes with realism.

The narrative moves seamlessly through different parts of Portia's life. We read of the years since the car accident, her arrest and also her trial. I found the scenes surrounding her arrest gripping. Not only did I, as a reader, not understand exactly why she had been arrested but neither does Portia and so we literally shadow her through her discovery. Her crime is gradually revealed to both the reader and protagonist and I thought this was a fantastic way in which to do so.

There are some difficult themes in this book; grief, PTSD, what can happen if mental illness is left untreated and if memories are not properly processed. The author deals with all of this with both compassion and empathy.

As a debut novel this is fabulous. I was gripped from the very first page to the last. It moved along at a swift pace which suited the genre very well. It was an entertaining yet emotive read that was compelling in its sincerity.

I highly recommend this book and hope you enjoy it every bit as much as I did.

The Bookseller by Valerie Keogh - #bookreview #blogtour

Book cover of The Bookseller by Valerie Keogh

I adored my father. He was a tall, broad-shouldered man with work-callused hands, his round face perpetually tanned from days outside as a labourer on a building site. On minimum pay, to make a decent income, he needed to work long hours, often seven days a week...

***

The Blurb

A woman with a dark past...

Helen Appleby just wants a quiet life. Recently released from prison for the manslaughter of her partner, she's trying to forget her past mistakes – all of them - to rebuild her life and move on.

When she decides to open a bookshop, she’s certain this is the perfect new start. Here, amongst the quiet shelves of her shop and between the covers of her books, she can hide away from the real world and begin again. The world of books the perfect place to find happiness - even if it is all lies.

But the past can never stay hidden…

As she settles into life as an apparently timid bookseller, it seems that someone is determined to sabotage Helen's new life and ruin everything she's built.

But Helen has killed once before. And to protect her future, she could be willing to kill again...

Don't miss another page-turning, nail-biting read from the queen of psychological thrillers, Valerie Keogh! Perfect for fans of J.A. Baker, Keri Beevis and Nina Manning.

My Review

I am always excited when a new novel by Valerie Keogh comes along. I have read several and they never disappoint. This one was no exception. In fact, a Valerie Keogh novel set in a bookshop is dream reading material for me.

Full of suspense, the book had me gripped from the very first page to the last.

The main character is Helen who has been recently released from prison for killing her partner, Toby. Her dream has always been to open a secondhand bookshop. Now that she has served her sentence, she embraces her dream and the opportunity for her to start afresh.

Helen was a fantastic character; full of hope for the future but her paranoia threatens it all. On several occasions I found myself questioning how reliable a narrator she was. Throughout the book we are told that there is something darker lurking from her past which is eventually revealed to the reader. I loved the way her character developed throughout the story and the author did a brilliant job in her portrayal of Helen.

The secondary characters each had a vital part to play in the story. As each one comes into her life, we see the potential motive that they might have to bring Helen's new life tumbling down around her ears. In all of Ms. Keogh's novels, she introduces a limited number of characters and therefore, they are well formed and have an significant part to play.

The plot is appropriately paced for it's genre. It was fast paced enough to make it a quick read but equally had enough going on in the plot to provide depth. I felt the ending was satisfying and I was pleased by the way the author concluded the book, particularly regarding Helen's self-awareness.

If you enjoy psychological suspense books with a darker edge, I guarantee that this one will keep you gripped. Another triumph of a book from Valerie Keogh and I hope you enjoy it every bit as much as I did.

The Girl in the Window by Diana Wilkinson - #bookreview #blogtour

I can't wait to be settled in the corner of Angelo's, my favourite cafe in all the world. It's nothing to do with the ambience, or even the owner's effusive personality. It's all to do with location...

***

The Blurb

I know their secrets...

Every morning, I sit at the same table of my favourite café, sip my cappuccino, and watch them.

The woman has no idea I’m watching, day after day, unravelling the secrets of her life. I see the way she smiles when he arrives, how she glances over her shoulder… like someone who is hiding something.

She thinks she’s in control, but has no idea I’m on to them…

I know a lot more about the man. For a start, he’s not who he pretends to be – his lies are as plain as the nose on your face.

There’s more to this story than meets the eye, a lot more than I’ll ever let on. I already know a lot about the man, but have learnt so much more from watching.

Why do I think the man should tell me what’s going on?

Because he’s my husband. That’s why.

An unforgettable tale of deceit, lies and revenge, from the bestselling author of The Girl in Seat 2A.

My Review

This book is a psychological thriller full of tension and suspense.

The main character, Izzy, has had a difficult childhood. When she meets and marries Jed, she finally feels secure. Until she notices him regularly visiting a woman in the street where she sits and drinks her coffee.

Whilst I found Izzy difficult to relate to I was totally gripped by her story. The narrative is written completely from her perspective, so it is the only point of view that we read. I found myself questioning how reliable a narrator she was. However, I am going to let you discover the answer to that question yourself.

It was written in very short and snappy chapters that definitely made for 'just one more chapter' syndrome. You know the kind that makes you stay up a bit past bedtime in order to read just a little more of the book. Consequently, it is a quick and easy read and very enjoyable for it.

The book is full of secrets, lies and deception, accompanied by some fabulous twists and turns. The twist the story takes at the end was unexpected and well written. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.

I enjoyed this very much and recommend it to fans of psychological suspense novels.

Reading Roundup for June 2024 - #bookreviews #guestposts #spotlights #blogtours

Here we are at the end of June and I could not resist sharing this photo of my lovely Roxie with you. If a dog was to have a bad hair day this would be it! I can hardly believe that she is almost seven months old already. It seems no time at all since we brought her home. I adore this puppy and cannot imagine life without her now.

The weather has been nice enough that Roxie and I have been able to sit in the garden with a book and a bone respectively. I have read some really good books this month. What have you been reading?

Books I Have Read

Leeza McAuliffe Has Loads More to Say by Nicky Bond - This was a great read which is aimed at a young adult audience. I enjoyed it very much. You can read my review by clicking here.

Bring Me Sunshine by Alex Brown - This is a wonderfully uplifting read which is perfect for summer. If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

The Warrior's Forbidden Maiden by Lissa Morgan - This book made for a fabulous few hours of historical escapism.  If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

Monti and Leo: A Newcomer in Pocketville by Sylvie Kantorovitz - A charming graphic novel for early readers.  If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

The Last Line by Stephen Ronson - This was chosen by my Book Group this month. Enjoyable as it was set in my hometown during WWII.

Northern Boy by Iqbal Hussain - This made for a fabulous read and was easily my favourite book this month.  If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

Serendipity by Maria de Fatima Santos - This is based around the Traveller community in Scotland and is a fantasy story aimed at middle grade readers.  If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

The Mother by Valerie Keogh - Another excellent book from the pen of Valerie Keogh.  If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

The Butterfly Garden by Rachel Burton - Lovely dual timeline book set in 1963 and 2018. If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

Belly Woman by Benjamin Black - This is the memoirs of Dr. Benjamin Black, an obstetrician who travelled to Sierra Leone during the Ebola outbreak in 2014. If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

All Among the Barley by Melissa Harrison - This was worth every moment spent reading it. If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

The Clarks Factory Girls at War by May Ellis - This book is set in Somerset during World War One, and features the lives of three seventeen year old young women. If you would like to read my review you can find it here.

Upstairs at the Beresford by Will Carver - This was not my usual reading fare. It was an interesting read but quite dark at times.

10 Exciting New Releases in July 2024

There are so many fantastic looking books being published in July. It has been difficult to choose only ten but here they are; my favourite ten.

Whoever You Are, Honey by Olivia Gatwood

BEHIND THIS GLASS, EVERYTHING IS MORE BEAUTIFUL

On the Santa Cruz waterfront, every house is as perfect as the people inside. Not so for Mitty and Bethel, the oddball pair in the dilapidated bungalow – they are the last vestiges of a town now housing the tech elite. But Mitty is about to cross the threshold. Someone has arrived next door who finally wants to know this forgotten girl.

Lena is different and she knows it. Reliant on her entrepreneur boyfriend Sebastian, her life is oddly limited for someone bathed in wealth. But when she sees Mitty, Lena begins to recognize a part of herself she has yet to face, something anxious, something broken – something real.

And in this salt-blasted town, friendship will bleed into obsession, minds and bodies will betray, and the past will come back with a howl and a bite.

Thrilling, seductive and prescient, WHOEVER YOU ARE HONEY is a blazing debut that dissects perfection, examines how women are made and explores the intersection of passion, technology, and power.

The Seal on the Beach by Mara Bergman & Brita Grandstrom

Little Maggie is on holiday with her aunt and uncle. Meanwhile her mum waits for Maggie’s baby brother to come home from hospital. On a walk across the wild Norfolk shoreline, Maggie finds a seal pup stranded on the beach, all alone. She is the sweetest thing Maggie has ever seen. But without her mum, how will the seal survive? Who will rescue her and will she ever be returned to the sea, and find her family again? Expressed through her vivid dreams and thoughtful actions, Maggie longs for the rescue and survival of this dear little seal pup. And, all the while, she hopes with all her heart to be reunited with her own mum and baby brother again.

A Love Letter to Paris by Rebecca Raisin

Late at night when I wander the streets of Paris, my thoughts turn to her… How do I tell her how I feel? Perhaps, I need to show her…

The pretty little streets of Montmartre are abuzz with a rumour. Apparently a mystery matchmaker, known only as ‘Paris Cupid’, has somehow helped the city’s most famous bachelor find love.

But old-fashioned romantic Lilou is staying very quiet. She’d just wanted to set up her best friend, and to get on with her life selling whimsical old love letters, in Paris’s famous St. Ouen market.

She hadn’t imagined her little Paris Cupid project could ever have attracted so many people looking for true, heartfelt romance. Though the truth is that Lilou adores helping people find the right person. Even if her own love life is nothing short of disastrous.

But then a message arrives. And it’s just for her. Someone is in love with her. Someone who knows her secret. But they’re keeping their own identity secret too… Could it be from cheerful, talkative, flame-haired Felix? Or quiet, beautifully handsome Benoit? Or even Pascale – who drives Lilou mad every day?

After so long of helping others find their soulmate, is it time for Lilou to find love of her own in Paris herself?

Tudor Executions by Helene Harrison

The Tudors as a dynasty executed many people, both high and low. But the nobility were the ones consistently involved in treason, either deliberately or unconsciously. Exploring the long sixteenth century under each of the Tudor monarchs gives a sense of how and why so many were executed for what was considered the worst possible crime and how the definition of treason changed over the period. This book examines how and why Tudor nobles like Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham; Queen Consort Anne Boleyn; Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey; and Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex, fell into the trap of treason and ended up on the block under the executioner’s axe. Treason and the Tudor nobility seem to go hand in hand as, by the end of the sixteenth century and the advent of the Stuart dynasty, no dukes remained in England. How did this happen and why?
