Bamboo Heart: A Daughter's Quest by Ann Bennett - #giveaway #excerpt #blogtour

I am delighted to be bringing you an excerpt of this book, Bamboo Heart: A Daughter's Quest by Ann Bennett. It is the first in her Bamboo Heart Trilogy and it looks like fabulous historical fiction.

What's more is that there is a giveaway of one of the author's other books, The Lotus House, which you can enter by scrolling further down this post. Good luck!

The Blurb

When Laura Ellis, a successful city lawyer, arrives home to see her dying father Tom, a mysterious stranger is watching the house. This leads her to embark on a journey to discover their connection.

To do so, she has to retrace her father’s steps; to the Bridge on the River Kwai: where as a prisoner of war of the Japanese, Tom endured disease, torture and endless days of slavery; and to the beautiful island of Penang, to uncover his secrets from the 1930s.

For Tom made himself a promise: to return home. Not to the grey streets of London, where he once lived, but to Penang, where he found paradise and love.

As Laura searches for the truths Tom refused to tell her, in the places where he once suffered, lived and loved, she will finally find out the story behind his survival, and discover her own path to love and happiness..

This book has previously been published both as Bamboo Heart and as A Daughter's Quest. It won the won the award for fiction published in Asia, Asian Books Blog, 2015 and was shortlisted for "Best Fiction Title" in the Singapore Book Awards 2016.

The Excerpt

These are the opening paragraphs of Chapter 1. Laura Ellis, a lawyer working in Paris, has been called home to London to see her ageing father, Tom who has had a fall…

Hurrying out of the tube station on to Highbury Corner, Laura shivered in the chill drizzle of the winter afternoon. She glanced at the darkening sky and pulled her coat tightly around her. Hovering on the edge of the pavement, she scanned the lanes of stationary traffic for a cab, but seeing none, stepped onto the road, and nimbly threaded her way through the cars.

Her ankle turned as her left heel snagged between two uneven paving stones, and she cursed her tight work skirt and high heels. A goods lorry splashed past with a hiss of air brakes, spattering her legs and the hem of her skirt with filthy water.

‘Bloody hell!’ Ducking her head against the rain, she carried on, past the assortment of dusty charity shops, ethnic grocers and empty cafés, towards St. Paul’s Road. Soon she was away from the heavy traffic, hurrying along the broad pavements of Highbury New Park in the grey-green light filtering through the plane trees

As she rounded the final sweep in the road, and the old house came into view, she quickened her pace. There it was, still stately despite its shabby paint work. In years gone by it had not looked out of place, but now it stooped apologetically between its two smarter, recently gentrified neighbours with their white windows and scrubbed brickwork.

Laura saw that someone was standing in front of the house. She slowed down, panting from the effort of running. It was an old man. Dressed in a battered hat and grey overcoat, he was almost indistinguishable from the tree under which he sheltered. He seemed to be watching the house. Laura hesitated, puzzled. Then, taking a deep breath to steady her thumping heart, she ventured a few steps towards him. He turned and began to move away from her, shuffling rather than walking.

‘Hey,’ she called out, but he didn’t turn.

She watched his retreating form for a second then shrugged. He was probably one of the tramps who slept rough around Finsbury Park Station and was straying from his normal patch.

She paused before lifting the latch to the front gate. How overgrown the garden was. The scent of damp grass conjured a memory of pottering around behind Dad as a toddler, watching him weed the flowerbeds and prune the honeysuckle that smothered the front wall. She glanced up at the house. The curtains on the second floor sagged across the windows. A few greying socks hung from a clothes horse on the balcony, soaking in the rain. Ken, the lodger, would be fast asleep in the studio, amongst his paint pallets and whisky bottles, where he had been staying since he turned up for a brief visit in the summer of 1962.

The windows of Dad’s study were shut today. Normally he would have them open to let out the smoke as he sat puffing away on roll-ups, reading or working at his desk.

She let herself in through the front door. She stood still for a second, taking in the atmosphere and silence of the old house, its familiar smells of tobacco and stale cooking.

Then she kicked off her shoes and threw her coat on the hall table. The door to the back sitting room was shut. She pressed her ear to the panel. There was no sound, so she opened the door. The curtains were closed and she had to pause to let her eyes adjust to the gloom. The room’s furniture had been shoved together to make space for Dad’s bed. His portable radio chattered softly from the corner of the room.

‘Laura?’

She crossed the room and knelt down beside her father.

‘Dad.’

He raised himself onto one elbow. His blue striped pyjamas sagged from his bony shoulders. A crepe bandage was wrapped around his forehead.

‘Come here. I wasn’t expecting to see you. I thought you were in Paris.’

He held out his arms. He was smiling, but his face was pale and drawn with pain. She leaned forward to hug him. She put her arms around him, but sensing the fragility of the bones in his arms and ribs was afraid to hug him too tightly.

‘Marge called me this morning,’ she said. ‘I came straight away.’

‘You shouldn’t have come all that way. What a fuss about nothing. What on earth did they say at work?’

‘Nothing much. They couldn’t object really, could they? Anyway, what happened to you?’

‘Fell down the damned steps to the library. That ridiculous sodding stick gave way. The rubber bottom had worn down so it slipped—’

He paused for a coughing fit.

‘Ruddy leg broken in two places. Not that it was up to much anyway. Banged my head too.’

‘I hope they dosed you up with painkillers.’

‘Of course. Morphine, codeine, the works. I’m rattling like a tube of Smarties.’

She straightened up and smiled down fondly at him.

‘I’ll tell you what then,’ he looked up at her craftily. ‘I could do with a beer.’

‘You sure? It’s a bit early.’

‘Nonsense. It’s nearly dark. There is some in the fridge in the study.’

She padded through to his study at the front of the house. Her feet were still wet from the walk.

‘Can I turn on the heating?’ she called. ‘It’s a bit bloody cold in here, Dad.’

‘Boiler’s broken down. I’ve been meaning to get it fixed.’

She stopped in the doorway to the study. Towering piles of books, newspapers and journals crowded every surface, the desk, the sideboard and even the floor. On the desk, ringed with coffee stains, were dirty cups and glasses, an ash tray overflowing with cigarette ends.

She was about to move away when she saw something poking out from between the pages of a book. It looked like a photograph.

She slipped it out and stared at it. A faded sepia portrait, battered and creased. One of its corners had been torn away. It was someone she’d never seen before. It was a young woman. Although her complexion was pale, she had oriental features: dark eyes the shape of almonds, slightly tilted at the edges, a full mouth, a sheen of black hair drawn back severely from her face. She had a serious, demure expression, betraying a trace of surprise at the flash of the camera bulb. Laura turned over the photograph. The ink was so faded it was almost colourless. It looked as though it had been in water, but she could just make out the words written neatly in flowing script: ‘To my dear Thomas. Good luck. Joy de Souza. Penang, November 1941.’

The Leap Year Proposal by Susan Buchanan - #blogtour #authorQ&A #giveaway #authorinterview

I am delighted to welcome the author, Susan Buchanan onto the blog today. Susan was kind enough to agree to answer some questions about her latest book, The Leap Year Proposal. She has also been generous in offering a signed copy of her book to giveaway. Information on how to enter is at the bottom of this post.

But first, let me give you some info about the book.

The Blurb

Three women. One crazy hen weekend.

A life-changing decision. When three women meet on a mutual friend’s hen weekend on the Scottish island of Arran, they get more than they bargained for when one of them has the genius idea of proposing on 29 February, like the age-old Irish tradition.

High-flying businesswoman Anouska and boyfriend Zach are deliriously happy and madly in love. If only they had more time together. But now she’s pregnant and doesn’t know how to tell him since having kids hadn’t featured in their plans.

Dog walker Jess lives with her childhood sweetheart, but they’re already like an old married couple, without the romance, or the wedding, or the ring. When Mark doesn’t propose on New Year’s Eve, Jess is gutted and decides to take matters into her own hands.

Ellie and Scott still live apart after six years, and his lack of commitment is a sore point. She’s up for a huge promotion which involves moving country. It’s make-or-break time. She needs to know he’s worth turning down the job for.

The women meet weekly, helping each other with decisions big and small, becoming each other’s support system in the run-up to ‘the big ask’.

Will love conquer all or will their hopes and dreams come crashing down around them?

***

Welcome to the blog Susan.

Thanks for inviting me.

Q. Intriguing concept – leap-year proposals. Are you a feminist? And do you think the concept of leap-year proposals still resonates today?

A. Am I a feminist? I’m a feminist in so much as I’ve never thought, not even for a second, that I don’t have as equal a right as a man to do something, simply because I’m female. I think whether the proposal idea will resonate or not depends on the person. You’ll have those who rail at the idea of women having to wait until 29 February every four years to propose, and then you’ll have people like me who like the uniqueness of the date and the fact that 29 February only exists every 4 years, and will just roll with it.
Yes, I proposed on 29 February – although that morning I had no plans to!

Q. How many drafts of your books, and particularly this one, did you do?

A. Nowadays I usually do 2-3 drafts, then more after edits. This one went through a lot more edits as so many things changed based on feedback. I’ll never know which was the better version. I loved both, but clearly I’m biased!

Q. So, does that mean you cut characters and scenes? Do you delete scenes or keep them? I’ve heard writers should never throw anything away.

A. Yes, I cut both characters and scenes, and that’s not something I usually do. But in traditional publishing, you often have to fit exactly what they’re looking for, so I did that for this book. I keep all versions of my books, so those scenes may be used as a little extra for my newsletter subscribers at some future point.

Q. What to your mind is the most romantic scene in the book?

A. Hmm, that’s a toughie, but I guess I’d have to say the penultimate one with Zach and Anouska (not including the epilogue). If it doesn’t get the readers rooting for them, I’ve done something wrong!

Q. What would you say the themes are in the book? Obviously romance, but I get the impression female friendship is a key one.

A. Absolutely it is. The three women end up spending a lot of time together – time when their partners, for various reasons, aren’t around. It works in their favour in one way as they’re trying to craft these proposals in secret. The strength and bond of female friendship is definitely one of the main themes in the book. Betrayal, second chances and forgiveness also feature heavily.

Q. Did you have any actors or people in mind for any of the characters in the book as you wrote it? If not, who would you like to take the lead roles if The Leap Year Proposal was made into a film?

A. Not as I wrote it, no, although interestingly I did for the book I wrote after this one! I don’t tend to normally. Perhaps Claire Foy for Ellie, Emilia Clarke as Jess and Gemma Arterton as Anouska. For the love interests, perhaps Taron Egerton, Theo James and Nicholas Hoult, but I’m not telling you who is who!

Q. What can we expect from Susan Buchanan in 2025 and 2026?

A. Well, quite a lot, I think! I released the third in my Christmas Spirit series in November 2024 after a gap of almost ten years! I know! And it was so well received, and I’ve had so many ideas for future books in the series, I can confirm there will be another Christmas Spirit book in 2025 and probably again in 2026. However, before that there’s You Can’t Hurry Love, my romance set in Costa Rica, and heavily featuring a sloth sanctuary – if you’ve never been, you really have to go. Sloths are so cute! You Can’t Hurry Love will be out in May and is already up for pre-order: https://books2read.com/u/mKG0p5

Thank you so much for coming onto the blog today Susan. It's been wonderful to have you and I'm sure the book will do brilliantly.

'Mum, come on.' Lara put her woollen-mittened hand in her mum's as they approached the school's main entrance.

The Blurb

Can a sprinkle of magic heal broken hearts this Christmas?

With Jacob now at the helm at the cosy Sugar and Spice café, it’s the perfect opportunity for Christmas Spirit Lara to weave her magic.

Fraser is floundering in his new role as headteacher as he grapples with guilt over having to place his beloved mother in a care home, leaving him feeling lost and alone during what should be a joyful time.

Meanwhile, school janitor Paul is torn between his desire to feel needed and the pressure from his wife to retire, dimming the season’s sparkle.

Valerie, overwhelmed by the demands of newborn twins, feels she’s not giving her other daughter enough attention. She needs a bit of me time and for her husband to realise the responsibility for the kids falls to both of them.

And Bella, heartbroken after her husband’s shocking request for a separation just a year into their marriage, longs to escape the memories of last year’s perfect Christmas.

Can Lara help them rediscover joy, connection, and the true spirit of the season?

A heartwarming journey filled with friendship, community, and a dash of holiday magic that promises to transform the lives of those in need of hope this Christmas.

My Review

If you are looking for the perfect Christmas read then you need look no further than this book. There is also a giveaway of a signed copy of the book at the bottom of this post.

I had not even realised that this was the third in the Christmas Spirit series until after I had finished reading this book. Needless to say, reading its predecessors is not necessary to your enjoyment of this book. Having said that, I enjoyed this one so much that I would like to go back and read both A Christmas Spirit and Return of the Christmas Spirit.

There was so much to love in this book. The characters, the plot and the setting all ooze with festiveness. The book is primarily based in a cafe called Sugar and Spice which is run by brother and sister, Jacob and Tabitha. It is the heart of the community and therefore, much of the story revolves around it. Indeed, it is every bit as important as the characters.

It was a quick and heartwarming book to read. I loved all of the characters, but Lara had to be my favourite. The daughter of single mum, Tabitha she is central to the story and also links us to her head teacher Fraser and to Bella, her teacher.

It is such a warm and comforting book to read. I rarely give books of this genre five stars but this was well worthy of it. I found myself thinking of the characters when I was away from the book and had time permitted I would have gobbled it up in one sitting.

This is the first book I have read by Susan Buchanan. As well as the two books in the series which I have already mentioned, I would love to read more of her work too. I highly recommend this lovely book to read in the run up to Christmas. It would also make the perfect Christmas gift.

Ever since I read Jean Fullerton's novel, A Stepney Girl's Secret last year I have been itching to read more of her work. If you would like to read my review of A Stepney Girl's Secret, you can find it by clicking here. When I was offered the opportunity of joining the blog tour for Felicity's War, I did not have to think twice about it and I was not disappointed.

It was a delightful read, and I loved the main character Fliss. She is strong willed and determined and was wonderful to become acquainted with. From the very beginning of the book, I warmed to her bubbly personality.

This is the third in the Stepney Girls series. It continues the story of the Carmichael family. A Stepney Girl's Secret has Prue Carmichael as it's main character. Fliss is Prue's sister and so we can step back into life at the rectory.

The author writes very well, and it was so easy to become involved in the story that I almost felt I was there. She is a great storyteller and has the ability to engage the reader in her story.

The reader becomes immersed in their lives and the reality of living in London during the Blitz. The nightly air raids and having to retreat to the underground shelters felt very real. The author does a great job of bringing the atmosphere of life in East London very much to life.

As one would expect in a book of this genre, there was a love interest running throughout. Fliss is instantly attracted to the policeman, Tim when their paths cross at an early point in the book. It was exciting to see whether they would get together eventually as they sit on such opposite sides of the fence.

It was an uplifting and heartwarming read which I enjoyed very much. I really must get my hands on the second book in the series, A Stepney's Girl's Christmas.

Having now read this book the question I am left asking myself is, why have I never read anything by Sue Moorcroft before? If this book is typical of her back catalogue, and the others are as gorgeous as this one, then I cannot wait to get stuck into more of her titles.

I am also thrilled that this is the first book in an anticipated trilogy as I still have two more books to read when they are published.

It is set on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, and the descriptions of the environment are glorious. I challenge anyone who reads this not to want to hop on an aeroplane and go there.

The main character is Thea, the head gardener at Rothach Hall. When Dev arrives and unexpectedly ends up as one of the seasonal gardeners, the chemistry between them is undeniable.

What is great about the plot is that the reader knows from the outset the real reason behind Dev being at the hall, and it was obvious that sooner or later, this would become apparent and have a huge impact on the burgeoning relationship between them. The author has created a cast of believable characters, not just in Thea and Dev but also in the secondary characters too. Pivotal to Thea and Dev meeting is Daisy the dog, who is a wonderful addition to the story.

Ms. Moorcroft has a story-tellers instinct, and she conveys this on the page extremely well. Anyone who enjoys contemporary fiction will love this book every bit as much as I did.

The Blurb

Hannah and Drew use the same elevator.

Hannah and Drew aren’t looking for love.

They haven’t even met.

Yet something is happening

Amiable TV production accountant Drew has turned his back on love after the death of his fiancée, an incident which cemented his longstanding elevatophobia. When Drew moves towns and jobs for a fresh start, he hears a voice in the office lift telling him to “be careful”.

Is it his fevered imagination, the ghost of his fiancée, or someone playing a cruel prank? Quickly, he becomes desperate, foolish... and unexpectedly smitten.

Sweet and sassy Hannah wouldn’t mind finding love, but keeps choosing the wrong boy friends. Her innate social anxiety, deepened by bad experiences with a preying boss, is a huge barrier to dating anyone new.

When Drew discovers the adorable girl behind the voice, a relationship blossoms alongside a shared determination to bring justice to their workplace, risking everything.

Will their daring plan succeed or will it jeopardize the happiness they’ve found with each other?

***

The Excerpt

Our delightful, sparky but shy MC, Hannah, is considering meeting Drew, who she’s been talking to in the office lift. However, she’s massively resistant to meeting men, and very out of practice with dating.

Her best friend and neighbour Amy, a ballsy Welsh firefighter, agrees to an evening out to celebrate Hannah’s tentative steps towards romantic involvement. Cue a very odd “fake dating”…

Amy refilled her glass, drank, and then bit her lip, thinking. ‘You know what you need? Practice.’

‘Eh?’

‘Date practice. Now, here, with me.’

Hannah laughed. ‘Ames, we’re mates. We’re not on a date.’

Amy coughed, shuffled her shoulders, and put on a deeper voice. ‘The name’s Drew.’

Hannah darted glances around the sparsely populated Italian restaurant. ‘Stop it,’ she hissed. ‘You’re embarrassing me.’

‘Oh,’ Amy continued, contralto. ‘I thought you wanted to come on a date with me, Elle.’ She pushed her seat back, preparing to stand.

Hannah tugged Amy’s hand. ‘Shhh. Sit down.’

The strapping firefighter—unusually feminine in a low-cut maroon blouse and long navy skirt—smiled contentedly and sat.

‘Anyway, it’s Hannah, not Elle,’ Hannah snipped.

‘You’ll have told him your real name?’

‘Of course. I’m not trying to be fucking Banksy.’

Amy tutted. ‘Bit sweary, isn’t it, for a first date?’

‘Fuck off,’ she chided quietly. ‘Besides, what happened to you being Drew?’ She shot a pointed look and sipped her fizz.

Amy put on a serious face. ‘So, Hannah, how many other men have you slept with?’

Hannah sprayed Prosecco across the table. ‘He’d never ask me that!’

Amy wiped droplets from her chest, holding in a laugh. ‘You should tell him the worst stuff up front, not waste more time by having a short relationship that didn’t go anywhere.’

‘You mean scare him off quickly?!’

‘No, but you want marriage and babies and stuff, right? No sense in wasting a ticking clock with the wrong person.’

‘What about having fun? Huh? Or using this as a test to see if I can start dating again?’

Amy pointed. ‘There you go, tell him he’s a dry run for Mr Right.’

‘Ha fucking ha.’

Amy tutted, waggling a finger. ‘Sweary Mary get no pokey-pokey.’

She slapped the hand away playfully. ‘I know you’re a “no fear, run into burning buildings” kind of person, but I might tread a bit more cautiously if that’s okay?’

Amy looked hard, then sighed. ‘I suppose. Sorry.’

Hannah pensively drew circles on the table mat with her fingertip. ‘Besides, it’s not how many men. It’s what they’ve done to me.’

Amy laid her hand on Hannah’s. ‘I know, Han. And that’s what you—and Drew—have to get past.’

‘Yeah, thanks.’

Amy brought the glass to her lips. ‘But, you know, for completeness, how many?’ She drank, raising a single eyebrow.

Hannah scowled and pulled her hand away. ‘I’m not getting into competitive bedpost-notching with you, Ms Jones.’

‘Sorry. But, serious for a moment, what was the worst?’

‘I’ve got a bloody roll-call, Ames.’

‘Would you tell him? You’ve heard his Katie story—and that’s pretty horrendous.’

‘Yeah, I’ll tell him. The Z-list he’s got to avoid appearing on if he wants access to this temple to female wonderment.’ She gesticulated at herself.

It triggered a thought about the prospect of relations with Drew, and her tummy went a little skippy.

‘Fire away, then. I mean, I know about Stuart.’

Hannah snorted. ‘The straw that broke the camel’s back.’ She gazed at the restaurant’s appalling faux Sistine Chapel ceiling. ‘Ben wanted me to throw out my chick-lit collection. Bad idea. Hugh slept with my best mate at Uni. Peter wanted me to stop speaking to all other men, including my mates. Jon wanted to do it on the first date. Charlie didn’t want to do it on the first date. Or even the tenth date. Shame, because it felt like he was hung like a racehorse.’ She sighed. ‘I think he was gay. What a waste. Anyway.’ She drummed her fingers on the table. ‘I voted Remain, and that was enough for Simon to drop me like a hot EU regulation. Oh, and you met Ollie, remember? You happened to pop over when he was at mine.’

‘Oh, yeah. Great stubble, bad shoes.’

‘After you left—like immediately, he asked about a threesome.’ Hannah gave a humungous eye-roll.

‘And you didn’t think to run that past me?’

Hannah slapped Amy’s hand.

Mercifully, at that point, the server arrived with their dinner.

The Cornish Rebel by Nicola Pryce - #BookReview #BlogTour #giveaway

The ship was rising and falling, the wind tugging at our cloaks. 'There - on that promontory - that's Pendennis Castle.' Mary James handed me the telescope and an outline of turrets and battlements sharpened into focus.

'The soldiers have got their telescopes trained on us.'

Around us, angry white crests peaked and broke; a fresh burst of spray carried on the wind and Mary clasped her cloak tighter. 'They'll be expecting us. Mr Trevelyan's very particular about letting them know we're coming. They'll recognise our flags. One shows we're from America and one shows we're carrying grain'...

In the wake of her mother's death, Pandora Woodville is desperate to escape her domineering father and finally return to Cornwall. Posing as a widow, she safely makes it across the Atlantic, bright with the dream of working at her Aunt Harriet's school for young women. But as Pandora is soon to learn, the school is facing imminent closure after a series of sinister events threatened its reputation.

Acclaimed chemist Benedict Aubyn has also recently returned to Cornwall, to take up a new role as Turnpike Trust Surveyor. Pandora's arrival has been a strange one, so she is grateful when he shows her kindness. As news of the school's ruin spreads around town, everyone seems to be after her aunt's estate. Now, Pandora and Aunt Harriet must do everything in their power to save the school, or risk losing everything.

However, Pandora has another problem. She's falling for Benedict. But can she trust him, or is he simply looking after his own interests?

Before I even begin this review I must tell you about the exciting giveaway you can take part in to win a copy of this lovely book, along with a tote bag, bookmark and postcard. How exciting is that? The link is below and I wish you the best of luck. It is only open to UK entrants.

Anyhow, onto the book. This is one of a series of books set in Cornwall by Nicola Pryce. They appear to be standalone novels with the setting being the linking factor. By coincidence, I have read a few books set in Cornwall recently. It is a beautiful county and I will never tire of reading the beautiful descriptions of the environment in any book.

This book offered everything that I like in historical fiction; a strong main character along with an immersion into the time and place in which it is set. The book is set during 1801 and Ms Pryce has researched her period extremely well and reading felt like a participatory event.

The main character, Pandora, was very likeable and easy to engage with. She is a resolute and determined character who faces the challenges in her life with strength and resilience. Along the way she discovers things from her own past and it was interesting to see how she dealt with uncertainty and revelation. When she meets Benedict, the main male character in the story, she is initially very wary of him. He is a surveyor for a Turnpike company who want to build a road going through land owned by Pandora's aunts school, and I will not say whether or not her fears were correct as I would hate to give away the very satisfying ending of this book.

I enjoyed this book very much. A story of courage and resilience all set in a beautiful environment in an interesting period of history. I highly recommend this book and I intend to read more by this author.
