The Other Killer by Heidi Field - #bookreview #blogtour

Standing on the pavement outside the prison is a rush like I haven't felt in twenty years, like someone's been standing on my chest for two decades and they just stepped off...

***

It has recently come to my attention that I must make it clear at the beginning of my reviews that I received this book for free from Zooloo's Book Tours. I have not been paid for doing this and all opinions are my own. I am Bookshop.org affiliated, which means I earn a very small amount of money if you buy from there using my direct link. Although I include purchase links to Amazon, I am not affiliated with them. I include them to make it easy for you to navigate to them if you so wish.

The Blurb

You can change your name. Change your life. But someone knows exactly who you are.

Twenty years ago, Mason Tucker was tried and convicted as the teenager who helped lure young boys to the serial killer known as the Pied Piper of Peasedale. After serving his twenty-year sentence, Mason is freed and hopes to remain invisible while he rebuilds his life as an adult, hoping to become a man he can be proud of. A new town, a new flat, a new job and a new purpose.

But living with secrets is challenging, and protecting his anonymity, the woman who stood beside him, and her child becomes impossible when the past pushes back. Hard. Within days of his release, Mason suspects he’s being stalked. He’s threatened and twice attacked. He never imagined being outside would be more dangerous than being in prison. The police aren’t an option. One headline will destroy him.

Someone wants him punished, not redeemed, and as danger closes in, you will never suspect where the next threat comes from.

My Review

Although this book is the third in a series, it also works brilliantly as a stand alone novel. In fact, the author was on the blog last year talking about her first book in this series, The Other Boy, and I reviewed the second book in the series, The Other Mother. Both that and this latest book are excellent and very well worth reading.

This book begins with the release from prison of Mason, also known as the Peasedale Accomplice. He has served twenty years and now wants to live quietly, with a change of name and anonymity. However, within days he realises someone knows about his past and he is being stalked.

The chapters, which are all told from Mason's perspective, flit between past and present. This enables the reader to understand how he was drawn into such wrongdoing in the past. The present day chapters demonstrate to the reader that although he has had a hard life in prison, he shows a level of naivety of life on the outside. Whilst he truly desires to help youngster, Kenny, I couldn't help but think that it would end badly for Mason, whilst truly hoping that it wouldn't.

The author tells her story very well. It is full of twists and turns and kept me gripped from the first page to the last. She knows just how to drag the reader in and how to keep them enthralled. I found myself constantly wanting to get back to this book when I wasn't reading.

She understands her characters well and thus portrays them with detail, understanding and compassion. I was really moved by Mason's story and his desire for a second chance at life. He is a character that will stay with me long after the book is finished.

This is an exceptional series of books which I highly recommend. That said, there are times that this novel is dark and graphic, and readers should be prepared for this. It won't suit everyone and if that is you then I would give this one a miss.

The Other Mother by Heidi Field - #bookreview #blogtour

I walk to the far end of the platform, checking over my shoulder every few seconds until I reach the furthest bench. I'm early for the train, so I settle down with a sweet tea and a magazine...

The Blurb

Suzannah is pregnant with her third child. The first is in prison. The second is dead. How far will she go to keep her unborn baby safe?

When Suzannah learns she is pregnant, she feels like safety and happiness are finally within reach. Her handsome, successful fiancĂ©, Alec, is over the moon about the baby. He proposes and pampers her. He thinks this is Suzannah’s first marriage and first child, but she’s keeping a few secrets.

Actually, a lot of secrets.

And they are dangerous…putting Suzannah in a position where she must choose who and what she’s willing to sacrifice to keep her baby and her freedom.

Drowning in her lies, Suzannah is desperate to bury her past, but her ex-husband, who abandoned her years ago, returns, stalking her and demanding to know what really happened to their daughter.

When the imprisoned serial killer who lured and groomed her son, threatens to sell his story to the press, Suzannah feels like the life she’d built and the precious one she’s growing, teeter on a precipice. Now the two children she’s hidden from Alec may be the least of her worries.

My Review

This book made for fabulous reading.  I had intended to read the first book in this series, The Other Boy, but alas, time ran away from me and I didn't find the time to do it. This did not impede my enjoyment of this book as it works perfectly well as a standalone novel.

The main character, Suzannah, was brilliantly portrayed. She is completely burdened and overwhelmed by secrets that she has been keeping from her fiancé, Alec. They are expecting their first child, but unknown to Alec, this is Suzannah's third child. Mason, her firstborn, is in prison for the part he played as accomplice to a notorious serial killer, and her daughter, Lily, was murdered when she was three years old. She has gone on to build this safe life with Alec until the past catches up with her in the form of her ex-husband, Breck.

We are drip-fed little reveals as the book goes on and I came to realise that Suzannah was not the reliable narrator I had at first assumed. She is a complex character, who we learn has more secrets than those she is keeping from Alec.  I loved the way the author developed her character as the book progressed.

It was a fast-paced, suspenseful novel which made for fantastic reading. I was thoroughly hooked and couldn't wait to get back to it each time I had to set it aside.  There were sufficient twists and turns to make this an exciting book to read.

The author has done an excellent job with this novel. As soon as time permits I will be going back and reading the first book. However, I understand that there is going to be a third book in this series and I can hardly wait for that. In the meantime, I highly recommend this novel.

Ty by Brian Montgomery #blogtour #bookspotlight

Today I am shining the spotlight on Ty by Brian Montgomery. It has been described as being a "harsh brutal story [that] was also raw and honest." prdgreads.

The Blurb

In a city gripped by fear and ruled by the iron fist of Albanian kingpin Kajan Marnesh (K.M.), fourteen-year-old Tyrone Lewis’ (Ty) life is a relentless battle for survival. Hardened by neglect and violence, Ty's world is turned upside down when he and his friend Asha discover an abandoned baby beside its dead young mother in an alleyway. This unexpected responsibility ignites a new purpose within him.

However, their journey through the gritty streets of London and the struggle to protect the baby lands Ty in jail, which is a harsh reality for a boy already burdened by life's cruelties. But even behind bars, Ty's resolve only strengthens. Upon his release, he is more determined than ever to change.

Ty forms the Hay Patrollers, a gang with a difference. Alongside Asha and other like-minded youths, they become the guardians of their community, providing support and safety where needed most. From encouraging the youth to return to school, running errands for the elderly, wiping out racism and knife crime, to standing up against the oppressive forces that haunt their streets, the Hay Patrollers are a beacon of hope in a dark world.

This gripping story follows Ty's transformation from a victim of circumstance to a leader of change. His journey is one of resilience, bravery, and the unyielding belief that even the most unlikely heroes can make a difference.

Loose Ends by Ninette Hartley - #bookreview #blogtour

In the small industrial town of Ridley, West Yorkshire, two young women walked out of the shirt factory gates together... They were looking forward to the weekend...

***

It’s March 1941 at the shirt factory in Ridley, Yorkshire. Ness is a typist in the office, and her friend Eileen works as a seamstress on the shop floor.

Nobody could have imagined the consequences when as a result of a prank Eileen plays on her friend, Ness’s name and address ends up in the pockets of two shirts destined for Royal Navy personnel on active service.

The fallout from Eileen’s action takes Ness on a challenging, life-changing journey where she must develop her talent for dressmaking and acquire the skills needed to run a business.

It is not easy during wartime, when money is short, clothes rationing is widespread and negative attitudes prevail.

Can she win through?
Or will a painful secret she must conceal destroy her chances?

***

The book begins in 1941 with carefree friends Ness and Eileen leaving work in anticipation of the weekend ahead.

The main character of the book is Ness and she is a wonderful main character. When Eileen jokingly puts Ness' name and address in two shirt pockets that she is packaging up at work, she unknowingly sets into motion a set of challenges that Ness will have to face.

What I loved about this book is how we see Ness develop throughout the story. The novel begins in 1941 and we follow Ness right through to 1953, and observe her grow from girl to woman. At an early point in the novel she faces a life altering event which she keeps secret for many years. However, it dogs her path significantly and we witness her bravery and courage throughout.

The secondary characters were equally well drawn. I loved Ness' mum and her friend Rose, as well as the devoted George. The author creates characters extremely well.

This book had everything that you would expect to find in a book of this genre; challenges, romance and secrets. It was extremely enjoyable and I would recommend it to anyone who likes fiction about strong women set again a working class background during World War II.
